Abstract
Background: Neonatal mortality rate is one of several indicatiors associated with child health status. The majority of the neonatal deaths are occuring in the first day and week, with about 1 million dying on the first day and close to one million dying within the next six days.1 According to WHO, the most common cause of neonatal death worldwide were infection (36%), preterm birth (28%) and birth asphyxia (23%).2 The most common cause of neonatal death in Indonesia is low birth weight and asphyxia.3
Objective: To assess the common causes of neonatal death in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Wangaya General Hospital.
Methods: A descriptive study
Method: it is a descriptive study with a cross sectional design conducted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Wangaya General Hospital. The study began from January 2018 to March 2019. Data collected from the medical record.
Results: There are 155 neonates admitted to NICU of Wangaya General Hospital, Denpasar during January 2018- March 2019. 21 of them died (13,5%). Among these cases, 14(66.7%) was male; 16 (76.2%) was preterm babies; 9 (42.9%) were extremely low birth weight; 20 (95.2%) were asphyxia; 13 (61.9%) were born through vaginal delivery; 18 (85.7%) with Respiratory Distress Syndrome; 6 (28.6%) with neonatal sepsis; 1 (4.8%) with congenital abnormality; 4 (19%) with hypoglicemia; 3 (14.3%) with meconium aspiration syndrome; and 4 (19%) with hemorrhage of newborn.
Conclusion: The common causes of neonatal death in Wangaya General Hospital NICU are preterm, extremely low birth weight, asphyxia, and respiratory distress syndrome.
